How done is better than perfect!
If you've joined me on my last blog post, you'll know that I had a BIG goal to create my very first online class on the Skillshare platform. Well, I managed to hit "publish" almost a week before my scheduled deadline!!!
I am not a perfectionist by any means, but I do dwell on details a little too much some times. I have learned over the last few years, that done is better than perfect. Agonizing over the details of a plan is necessary sometimes, for instance, when building a structure, or planning a Will, however, agonizing over the details of an online class... not so much!
I did plan well, I executed as best as my skill allowed and I did review my videos, edited my copy and fine tuned along the way. So all-in-all, I did my best!
Each time I reviewed my class sections, I managed to find yet another thing that I would have liked to have done differently - including insignificant things that didn't really have anything to do with the quality of my content or videos, like... my hair looked a frizzy and my top didn't really show it's true tone of a dirty-blush that I love so much! No biggie right?!!!
Well, if I focused too much on the details that are in the grand scheme of things, slight and insignificant, projects would never get done!
Am I right?!!
So instead, I hit publish and celebrated the fact that I tried something hugely out of my comfort zone, feel pretty successful about it and didn't agonize over the slight imperfections that may have stopped me from completing my goal otherwise.
What I did take away from the experience are a few things that I feel empowered about and I thought I'd share with you here!
How done is better than perfect!
- If we spend endless amounts of time tweaking, we will never finish what we start. So instead of agonizing, just finish it! Hit publish and celebrate and truly enjoy the feeling of getting it off your shoulders!! Then, take what you would have done differently and focus on the next item on your to-do project list with that new experience under your belt!
- You will spend far too much time talking about something that you'd like to do, rather than doing it! Can you relate?! Think about all of the times you've talked about doing something and have made up excuses for WHY YOU CAN'T do it! Figure out the what, and the how will reveal itself to you. Take the action and the path will be clear! It may not be a path that you originally planned, but you'll get there.
- When I push myself to go for a morning run, I don't agonize over tying my shoes so that they are perfect. I tie them and go! If I agonized over how tight or loose my laces are, I would never go for a run, and never finish that small but important goal for the day. Don't stress about the fine details, like Nike says, just do it!
- Lastly, I learned that you can always go back and tweak. So with this class, if I find anything "major" that needs to be fixed, I can always go back and edit it. So maybe that room isn't quite decluttered enough or decorated how you imagined it, it's ok. Finish it up as best as you can, and when you have fresh eye, a little bit more energy and time, you can tweak at another time!
I hope that you experience pure excitement of finishing a project that you've been working on and are ready to let it go, complete it, get it off your list and mind, even if it's not perfect!! The feeling is empowering and freeing!
