How to Pack Art Supplies for Travel: My Packing List & Tips
When I first started my art journey, I wanted to be able to take my supplies and paint anywhere. I love being in nature so being able to take a bike ride or a walk and still creating while doing so was very important to me. Here are my tips and trips on how to travel with your art supplies and still have everything you need to create a masterpiece.
Traveling by plane
When I’m flying I want to make sure I pack light and that also applies to my art supplies. My biggest tip is to make sure you keep your supplies to a minimum and make them easy to pack up. I keep only the essential paint colors with me when flying and also bring a small cloth bag that folds up pretty small to throw in additional supplies without taking up too much space in my carry-on.
Portable Art Supplies
Portable art supplies are great to travel with. I’ve created a portable watercolor palette using an old altoid tin which is great to take on bike rides and on the go. I also love this portable palette that I got from Amazon. It features a well for water and a place to mix some colors!
Planning for a bigger trip
When I’m planning for a bigger trip I take more of a variety of sketching tools with me. I try to make sure I have the basics but also add a little bit more for bigger trips because I know I’ll use it all. I like to use an old makeup bag to add some more supplies and I also love to use any jars that are small enough to hold water.
Inspiration comes from everywhere!
When I’m traveling or out in nature, I don’t expect to create an entire piece while I’m out. The idea of taking art supplies with you is being able to jot down some sketches, color ideas, or a general painting of what you’re seeing. I then take those pieces back with me and really flush them out into finished pieces.
