How to Be Creative When You Don’t Feel Like It

I am the queen of procrastination when I have too much on my plate or days like today when the sun is shining and I just want to be out in my greenhouse. If you don’t follow me on Instagram and haven’t seen the greenhouse my husband and I built last month, check it out here.

For the days I don’t feel like working on art that requires a lot of attention to detail or a lot of focus, I work on other things that provide me with a fun, easy, creative outlet. I thought I’d share with you some of the ways that I create when I don’t feel super creative.

Re-organize + decorate your creative space

I love to light a candle, grab my favorite drink (sometimes a tea or coffee), and get comfortable. I grab a fountain pen and a stack of my favorite notebooks and sketchbooks and allow myself to journal and brainstorm. Sometimes this process not only allows me to write down thoughts but it may also lead to sketching and brainstorming ideas for future art. The idea that we have to have a perfect end product can put stress on the process and even a lot of pressure on the outcome being perfect, too! Sometimes, sitting down and letting your mind flow on a sketchbook or a pad of paper helps get you out of your creative block.

Change it up: try different mediums and surfaces

When I don’t feel super creative I tend to stray away from watercolors or painting and pick a medium that might be a little different than what I normally work on. For me, that’s journal making and even paper collage. I’ve shown how I made my journals before, and they are super addictive to make! Working with paper creates a different experience that helps me enjoy making with my hands without the stress or pressure of the end result. My folds can be wonky, the paper I use is often vintage, there is so much character when working in this way.

I hope this helped give you some ideas on how you can easily create without putting too much pressure on yourself. I have a Youtube video showing you all of these ideas and more while walking you through the supplies I use for each. I hope you’re inspired and can find new ways to be creative when you don’t feel like it and still have fun and success!
