Note from Nicki Traiko’s Desk
I took some time this morning to write a “Note from Nicki” which I used to send out to my email list quite frequently. As of recently, I’ve been enjoying bringing it back here and there and today I wanted to share it with you on the blog! When I started writing, I let the words flow, and it was quite a long email. So, I’ve actually shared the complete note below with you. Consider this a sneak peek of what my subscribers get sent to their inbox!
My Art Business Routine
Growing up the term “starving artist” was something I heard over and over again which was one of the main reasons I didn’t pursue art in the first place. So when I started life i design, I wanted to create a world where I could pursue art full-time and earn a full-time income from it too. I’m grateful to be able to do that and I want to share my knowledge with all of you!
How to Be Creative When You Don’t Feel Like It
I am the queen of procrastination when I have too much on my plate or days like today when the sun is shining and I just want to be out in my greenhouse. If you don’t follow me on Instagram and haven’t seen the greenhouse my husband and I built last month, check it out here.

3 Tips for Boosting Creativity: for artists and hand letterers.
What an interesting few weeks. Our daily lives have been turned upside down with this virus and I can’t imagine a single person who hasn’t been impacted by what’s happening right now. I’m navigating what’s happening as best as I can and am happy that I have a business that is online based and that I already run from my home office. It’s a little more challenging for my husband and kids who are not as accustomed to being home 24/7.
These last few days especially, I feel very fortunate to have my creative practice where I get a reprieve from the news, social media posts and tv reports. The time I spend at my desk in the studio portion of my office, is a welcomed distraction, but it also fills me up with hope and joy and creative energy that spills into other parts of my life.
Paint a leaf loosely using watercolor
It’s also when I am most inspired to paint as many leaves and use as much color as possible. I use what I gather as reference and loosely paint what I see as I interpret colors, shapes and lines. If you haven’t played around with watercolor yet, it’s a very simple practice to help you learn how watercolor behaves and how you can easily, in a few minutes, add some interest to your sketchbook or journal pages!
I recorded this quick time lapse video for you to see how to sketch out a rough shape, loosely interpret what you see and play with color and water flow.
